Steve

I don't like bullies; I don't care where they're from.
Introduction

xxxxxHe's the all-American boy next door of bygone days. He's the scrappy little kid who didn't know when to quit. He's stubborn, but willing to listen. He'll challenge anyone, whether to discourse or to fisticuffs. He's Captain America.

Description

xxxxxBlond-haired, blue-eyed, 6'2" and very powerfully built, Steve looks like he just stepped out of a WWII US Army recruitment poster (and in fact, he kind of did). He is extremely attractive by mainstream American standards of masculine beauty, though he doesn't always seem to fully comprehend this. While his physique may not stand out as much now as it did in the 1940s, he still cuts a striking figure, even setting aside his considerable fame. He has excellent posture and economy of movement, but despite his confident bearing seems to take up less space than most men his size.

Reputation

xxxxxAlthough Steve's actual tenure in the Captain America USO show and film lasted only a few months in 1942, his image was used in comics, recruitment posters, and all manner of U.S. Army propaganda for the duration of the war. His fame in that regard is on par with Rosie the Riveter or Uncle Sam, and should still be familiar to most contemporary Americans, though up until his recent public re-emergence only a few veterans and history enthusiasts would have been able to put his actual name to the character. Regardless, his fame has rocketed again since he came out of the ice and revealed himself to the world, and anyone who has not been living under a rock knows at least that he is a Second World War hero who was in suspended animation and recently revived. Those paying even a little bit of attention to the news or social media probably knows that he was the first and only test subject of a U.S. Army human enhancement program which gave him superior strength, speed, and durability (the last presumably explaining how he managed to survive seven decades frozen in the arctic). People who have actually been following his meteoric rise with any level of interest will also know he's consistently expressed dismay at the state of the U.S. today and that he is still very ready to lend his strength to defend what he thinks is right.

History

xxxxxThe only child of poor Irish American parents, Steve grew up frail and sickly. This didn't stop him from standing up for what he believed was right, even when it earned him regular beatings at the hand of other children. His father died when he was quite young, and his mother died when he was nineteen, leaving him with only the support of his best friend, James 'Bucky' Barnes.

xxxxxWhen the US entered WWII, Steve tried to enlist in the Army with Bucky but was rejected repeatedly because of his poor health and small stature. He finally caught the attention of Dr. Erskine of the Strategic Science Reserve, an was recruited as a subject in an experimental supersoldier program codenamed Project Rebirth. After a brief but grueling procedure, Steve was transformed from the proverbial 90lb weakling to what the military of the time considered the ideal soldier: 6'2" and 240lb of solid muscle. However, with the untimely assassination of Dr. Erskine, the formula of the supersoldier serum was lost, leaving Steve its sole beneficiary.

xxxxxThough initially sent on a USO circuit portraying a character named Captain America, he proved his worth as a warrior and a leader when he mounted a solo rescue operation to liberate 400 POWs (including Bucky) from a Nazi research facility. After that, he led his own special operations team: the Howling Commandos. They went deep behind enemy lines to take on the most elusive and elite of Nazi forces. On one such mission, Bucky was lost and presumed dead. On another, Steve seized control of a massive prototype bomber en route to the continental US. When he discovered its payload was too volatile and the plane itself too big to safely land, he forced it down in the arctic ocean. Captain America was declared killed in action hardly more than a month before V-E Day.

xxxxx73 years later, he was discovered and revived by a secretive organization called S.H.I.E.L.D. The agency's director, Nick Fury, has assured Steve that he is needed to deal with a great number of entities that pose an existential threat to humanity. This danger was unknown in Steve's own day, but now they are a household word: mutants.

Powers

xxxxxProject Rebirth imbued Steve with superb strength, speed, and endurance. He can bench press 1,200lb, sustain a running speed of 25mph (he can run as fast as 57mph in a sprint, but cannot keep this up for long), and achieve 36ft laterally in a running jump (or 15ft vertically). He can withstand a great deal more blunt-force trauma (punching, falling, etc.) than unaugmented humans without sustaining injury, and recovers more rapidly from all forms of damage (by human standards; he still does much better with rest and medical care). His metabolism is exceptionally fast, as a result of which he requires more food than even other humans of similar size and musculature. He has an elevated resistance to many toxins and infections, and although he can still fall ill he tends to recuperate fast.

Skills

xxxxxSteve is an exceptional hand-to-hand combatant, and not solely on the merits of his experimentally enhanced abilities. He is actually a very talented haptic learner and gains proficiency in physical tasks very rapidly. His close-quarters fighting style is a mix of bare-knuckles boxing and various martial arts that he encountered during his years of service, and makes heavy use of improvised weapons. Though he has a particular fondness for fighting with targe shields, he is proficient with a variety of bladed weapons and firearms as well.

xxxxxHe has an innate talent for and extensive practical experience with small unit tactics. In this regard his specialty is guerrilla warfare, or other long-term missions with minimal logistical support and no supply lines. He is a skilled navigator and excellent at operating a wide range of land vehicles from the early 20th century. In addition to his native English, Steve is proficient in French and passably conversant in German, Russian, and Italian. He sang lead in his barbershop quartet, though he is a bit out of practice. He is also a very skilled illustrator with a particular knack for sketching people in motion.

xxxxxHe knows how to operate a variety of motor vehicles, but all through wartime experience. Despite the driver's license S.H.I.E.L.D. gave him by fiat, he's never been formally taught how to drive on actual streets with actual traffic laws.

Living Legend - During the 1940s, Captain America featured prominently in USO shows, propaganda films, and military recruitment posters.
Shield - His weapon of choice is a not-so-subtle reflection of his drive to protect, and he is always ready to stand up and defend those in need, with or without the shield.
Man Out of Time - Declared killed in action in 1945, he woke up 70 years later to find the world radically changed. Even after S.H.I.E.L.D.'s intensive (if selective) crash course in recent history, he still has no access to subtle and pervasive social cues like pop cultural allusions.
On Your Left! - Steve's extensive workout regimen includes running 10 to 15 miles every morning...much, much faster than most joggers. Or most cyclists. Or most motorists--in Manhattan, anyway!
My Country, Right or Wrong... - Got a problem with America? So does he, and he wants your help to set it right.
