Shaw, Lourdes

2013-04-25

Follow up from Sebastian's little visit with Doctor Doom.

Location

With the sun slanting hard through the windows, the New York skyline outside the massive bay windows was amber and black geometric shapes. Sebastian Shaw walked rapidly through the foyer, his collar turned up to fit his waist coat properly along the back of his neck, his mind running down a steady never ending list of priorities and gripes that had yet to be dealt with for the day. There was a work dinner due at seven at the Bump, where he was aware they had a poached quail breast stuffed with its own eggs that would inevitably taste like shredded newspaper, and he still needed to swing back by the office to get the Wellmington contract, if he had a chance in hell to get it under Blythe's fat fingers before he took off another one of his blasted four-day weekends to the shore--

"We're having a dinner party on Saturday," he said while passing the sunroom. Briefly in the corner of his eye: huge golden-glowing windows broken up by shadow plants. The soft gurgle of an indoor pond, swarming with orange wild-eyed koi, abstract paintings in shadowy cobalt and tasteful yellow.

"I already have the invitations prepared, dear," Lourdes's voice was deep for a woman, murky with its spicy hint of Spanish pronunciation. It brought to mind visions of hot sun baking sand along an emerald coastline, hazy blue mountains hunkering low and rounded in the distance.

Sebastian stopped, hands paused over his buttons.

He took a few steps backwards to look back into the room, leaning his head around the doorway.

"Is that my Doom robot?"

"He's quite the trinket, isn't he?" Lourdes idly turned the page of the environmental awareness magazine she was reading, wearing a bikini beneath a sunlamp, her hair loose and down around her shoulders. "I've been calling him Pepe."

"Pepe." Sebastian watched the android standing alongside his wife's chair, holding a drinks tray while she painted her toenails a deep maroon polish. Each are then adorned with small cabochon crystals. Lourdes always had nice toes; long and slender and feminine. "What's it wearing."

"It's a sombrero, my love."

Sebastian stood there for a long moment, folding down his collar and crossing hands in front of himself to fasten on his cufflinks.

"My lady."

Lourdes raised her patient laughing eyes to him, they were huge and dark and full of galaxies.

"You realize it's probably here to spy on us in our home for the Latverians."

"But of course." She smiled, soft as a kitten, as precisely dangerous as a bolt of lightning, fanning out her toes to admire their new decoration, "You could hardly expect him not to. I think I will take him into town with me when I go shopping tomorrow."

"Will you." Shaw tugged down on his waist coat and adjusted the ruffles at his sleeve, eyes narrowed a final moment, then simply not. "Capital. How do I look."

"Fabulously rich and powerful. But wear the other watch."

"Hrm." He moved out of the doorway again. But shortly his voice could be heard musing from the entryway, "About that dinner on Saturday?"

"Yes?" She called and turned to another page of her magazine, depicting a pair of doe-eyed chimps, hugging one another while looking out at the reader.

"Why don't we invite Norman Osborn and that little puling offspring of his. What's his name."

"Harry Osborn. You're all heart, my husband. I'll see he's invited."

"Excellent."

Lourdes plucked her mimosa from the androids tray for a long, savory sip, and then carefully stretched out her feet to dry, and begins to buff her fingernails. "What do you think, Pepe? Maroon or antique rose?"

Pepe did not seem to have much to say on the topic. Lourdes decided on the rose.
