João's Sedan, then Araujo Family Household | |
Somewhere on the streets of New York, in the early morning, in the midst of all the traffic, is a small four-seater sedan, about 10, 20 years old. This car is currently being driven by a Hispanic man in his mid-to-late 40s, with short, combed dark brown hair, eyes, and a combed brown beard. In the back seat, is a younger man in about his twenties, Gabriel, and a teenaged girl, Lucia. Lucia is currently asleep, her head on Gabriel's shoulder. After a few minutes of silence, Gabriel finally speaks up, in Brazilian Portuguese. "{Why are you making such a big deal of this? It's what she wanted.}". João quickly quips back. "{She passed out! They took her to the hospital! You know Luciana's not healthy enough for this!}". Gabriel quips back, stroking his hair back. "{Not healthy enough? She's a normal teenaged gi-}". As Gabriel speaks, his father quickly interrupts him. "{I'm not talking about this again until we get her home.}". Gabriel quiets up, and the rest of the ride is relatively silent, except for the slight murmurs Lucia makes in her sleep. They soon pull up in the restaurant's parking lot, where they silently park in the employee parking. Gabriel quietly lifts Luciana up, being slow as not to wake her, and quietly opens the door, and shuts it gently as to not create any strong vibrations. They walk upstairs through the staircase in the back entrance, heading up the living area above. A Hispanic woman, about mid-30s to early-40s, Mariana, is sitting on the couch, and heads to hug her daughter, until she notices she is asleep. Gabriel quietly takes her into her bedroom and tucks her in bed, before coming back into the living room. "{Mom, tell Dad this isn't a big deal.}". Mariana goes to speak, but João interrupts her. "{We should have never let you take her out! She's safer here!}". Gabriel's quickly quipping back loudly, before lowering his voice as to not wake Lucia with vibrations, as he holds his face down. "{You just want to lock her in here, never to let her see the outside world! You think it's dangerous for her, because she's different!}" Gabriel silently takes off his grey denim jacket, wearing only a black, short-sleeved shirt, setting the jacket on the couch. "{She had fun out there! We had planned for this the last month, I registered her last month!}". Mariana is quietly looking over to her husband, slightly sobbing. "{Why..didn't she tell us?}" Gabriel turns over to his mom, slightly angry. "{Because she knew you'd say no. You always say no.}". João is next to speak. "{We know what's best for her, Gabriel!}". Gabriel laughs silently to this. "{Best for her? No, you know what's best for you. It was already awkward enough having a son who was..a freak, so you send him away for three years, what, so I can learn not to use my abilities? And then, your daughter, your only daughter, is not only deaf and blind, but is also a freak, like me. But instead of helping her? You lock her up, so that she can't 'scare' anyone. Is that the way you think?}". Mariana is crying much harder now, full tears. "{Gabriel, no! We love you! We would nev-}". João interrupts again. "{You, get out of my house. Get out of my fucking house and do not come back. You are not welcome here or around Luciana.}". Gabriel grabs his jacket, slightly crying himself now. "{Fine. I'll let you know. I'm seeking custody of Lucia. I guess..I'll see you in court. Goodbye, mother.}". He looks one last time back to her door, before heading out the door. Once outside, he lights a cigarette, walking the rest of the way home as the morning mist hits him. "Fuck, now I need to find a lawyer". | |
