Vignette - Runaway

I'm pretty sure this one doesn't need a translation :).

Dramatis Personae

Lucia

2013-08-10

Lucia runs away. Well, actually she just calls a cab.

Location

<NYC> Nossa Cozinha, followed by a dingy taxi, and then <NYC> Village Lofts.

It's about 4-5AM. Lucia's parents are currently asleep in bed, but, Lucia herself is not. Infact, she's quietly sneaking through the apartment, grabbing the keys off the ring where they always are. Grabbing her cane, she slowly slips out, dressed in a jacket, track pants, and her converse. Quietly making her way downstairs, she unlocks the door into the restaurant, heading towards the counter area. Poking around with her cane, she finds the telephone.

Using the speed-dial, she quietly dials up a number, and gets a slightly gruff voice. "This is Joe's Cabs, how may I help you?". The man at the other side of the line is slightly monotonous, but Lucia of course cannot hear this or what he has said, she speaks up, slowly, as to pronunciate correctly. "Send cab, right away. I will pay you.". She then tells him the address, waits for a small vibration, and then hangs up. Locking back up, she heads out to the parking lot, waiting about ten-fifteen minutes.

She waits for the vibrations of the cab pulling up. As soon as she feels it, she makes her way, poking the cab with the cane until she finds the handle. A voice calls out as she does this. "Hey, watch out for the paint!". As she sits inside the back of the cab, the driver, who may or may not look like Moe Szyslak, calls back to her. "So, where you'll be heading?". Waiting again for the vibration, she speaks again, with the same pace as the phone call.

"Village Lofts. East Village.". She slowly fishes out her wallet, which Gabriel had given her a few years back for her birthday. The driver looks back at her for a second, glaring for a moment, before speaking up. "Okay..I think I know the way. That's that apartment building, right?".

As Lucia does not respond, he just huffs and begins driving. On the way, he speaks to her again. "So, why is a young lady like you heading to East Village this early in the morn'?". Lucia again does not respond. "Not much of a talker, are you, ey'?". Lucia this time responds, slowly. "I cannot hear you. I am deaf.". He then looks back at her, laughing a bit. "That explains why you' talk funny, I guess.".

About 20-30 minutes later, the car pulls up outside the lofts. "That'll be $19.94. Oh wait, you can't hear me, can you?". Noticing the car has stopped, she pulls about $40 dollars out of her wallet, putting it up front. "Keep the change.". Fumbling for the handle, she slides out, using the cane to lead her way towards the front door.

After a few moments of stumbling, she finally makes it up there. She tries opening the handle, but it won't open, due to key-card restriction. As she waits there, suddenly a young woman opens the door, which Lucia quickly side steps away from. She passes through the now open door.

The lady from before looks at her, but is in a hurry and says nothing, continuing to go on her way. Lucia finds the stairway, slowly making her way up with the help of a hand rail. Eventually, she gets to the third floor, finding it by counting the number of landings. She mopes around, finding the elevator. From here, she mentally recaps the steps she took the other day, finding her way to Gabriel's door. She slowly taps the door with her cane. Knock. Knock.
