Spreading happiness, one cupcake at a time
Introduction

xxxxxA 34 year old baker on a mission to make the NYC a little bit happier by way of baked goods and tasty coffee beverages. Having recently settled in Manhattan after a two year bout touring the country and generally enjoying a bit of freedom, Hanna is excited to share her baking talents with the microcosm that is NYC. Happy Cakes, her bakery, is open and welcoming to people of all stripes, human and mutant alike, although she frowns on those who speak ill of mutants.

History

xxxxxHanna’s parents came together through circumstances which were never fully explained to her, and she was never particularly determined to find out her origins. Her mother was the owner of a local organic cafe before it was cool to be organic, located just outside the naval base of Pearl Harbor; her father, as Hanna had heard, was a young man stationed on said naval base, although he was originally from somewhere in the mid-west US.

Hanna’s mother was in her late 20s when she found she was pregnant, but was quite determined to remain independent and care for her child on her own. Never the less, when Hanna was born, her mother’s extended family jumped into action, helping the young woman with all she could need as a young single mom. From the beginning, her father was nothing more than a vague figure mentioned in stories, his name wasn’t even listed on the birth certificate - if he knew he’d fathered a child, he never showed an interest in her existence. Hanna never wanted for anything, however, and her extended family lavished her with love and attention.

She was a decent student, well liked among her teachers and classmates, although never excelling at academics to the point of being considered gifted. At an early age, she showed an interest in her mother’s cafe, and as soon as her mom would let her, she began helping out around the shop in little ways, ultimately acting as an assistant chef and cashier at the cafe in her freshman year of high school.

Her mutation didn’t express itself until she was in her senior year of high school - emotions ran a bit high after a messy breakup just before prom. Hanna was leaking raw teenage emotions onto everything she touched, causing a, to this day, “unexplained” spike in ennui among the students and residents of the town for a week following. Her mother was an astute woman, and quickly realized that her daughter was the cause - rather than being angry, she addressed the issue the way they had addressed many other things - with food and love.

Cooking, baking, and preparing food became Hanna’s outlet for her emotions, and she soon discovered that she could keep her mutation in check by imbuing objects with the emotions in question. Further, she discovered that she could pass those feelings on to other people, either through direct contact, or through the food and objects she imbued. Needless to say, there were some cakes and coffee drinks that were just thrown out, because no one wants to eat a stress flavored sandwich, or a sadness cake - but the happiness and joy she naturally exuded into her work made the food and baked goods at the cafe even more popular than before.

For several years, Hanna continued to work for her mother while saving up for college, getting her emotions and powers honed to a well appreciated art form. Never one for academics, Hanna went to pastry school on the Big Island at 25, excelling at her craft, and returning to her hometown to open her own bakery - Happy Cakes - right beside her mother’s old cafe. The two businesses have worked well together, side by side for numerous years, becoming something of a tourist draw, although always catering to the locals first. Despite all the current events going on, both the cafe and the bakery remained open to all people - mutants and humans alike - and frowned heavily on discrimination of any kind.

When Hanna was 30, her mother passed away suddenly in her sleep, leaving Hanna devastated and for the first time in her life, feeling entirely alone. Unexpectedly, Hanna’s mother had left her a sizable inheritance, allowing her to live quite comfortably almost anywhere. Rather than allow her tumultuous emotional state to effect her cooking and baking, Hanna took a leave of absence from the shops, leaving them in the capable hands of her friends and family, and traveled the country for a bit trying to find herself and regain control of her raw emotions.

Now at 32, she has set down roots at last in New York City, deciding that if any city needs some Happy Cakes, it is this one. In early May of 2013, she opened up a new bakery store in an up and coming neighborhood in Manhattan. Open to all who care to come through the open doors of Happy Cakes, the bakery and coffee shop have begun to spread good cheer and happiness whenever possible. Openly mutant friendly, Hannah makes sure that all who need help get it, even if it cuts into her bottom line on occasion. If, or when, someone questions her about being so mutant friendly, she simply shrugs and offers a polite smile, stating that all are welcome, and that it is foolish to turn away business in such an economy. If they push the issue, she simply offers them a donut for their troubles, and sends them on their way... with a slightly nagging feeling that they left the stove on at home.

Powers

Reverse Psychometry

  • Hanna is able to store or imbue emotions onto objects, although it is easiest for her to transfer them to food or beverage items. The most ideal time to do this is during the initial mixing or cooking process, as opposed to after the baked good is completed. Doing so after completion makes it harder for her to control the dosage of the emotion, as it were. Typically, when Hanna has created something for general consumption, the person experiences that emotion gradually, and then it fades away gently as the food is digested. She has become quite good at limiting the amount of an emotion that is imprinted onto any one food item, and can usually limit it to a nagging feeling or generally contented glow. Her ability to imbue emotions spans the width and breadth of human emotions, although she has to be actively feeling it in order to make it convincing and feelable - alternately, she can siphon the emotion off of another person by touching them.
  • She does occasionally “flavor” alcohol or fruit extracts with an emotion, so that she may have a steady supply of appropriate emotions for baking purposes. These are very carefully guarded, and typically kept in a locked safe behind the money safe in the bakery. She is that worried about it. However, there are some times when she needs to actively vent uncontrollable emotions, either from herself or others. In these instances, she tries to dump the emotions into something that no one would want to eat - especially spoiled meat or rotten bread - that way it is less likely to cause someone trouble. She goes out of her way to thoroughly destroy these items, so that not even scavenging animals can consume them. The consequences of someone consuming an entire item that is that tainted in negative emotions would be going into a deep rage or depression of almost inhuman levels - it would pass once the food was digested, if they survived that rush of emotion.

Transferrable Empathy via Touch

  • Hanna can sense other people’s emotions, although she only gets a very vague sense of their feelings when she is near them. When in physical contact, she is able to get a much better and detailed sense of their emotional state at the time. If she is in contact with two people, she can convey the emotions of either or both to the other, using her as a conduit. This can be very disorienting for all involved, and breaking that conduit while in mid stream has knocked Hanna out before - as such, she really avoids doing that.
  • She can also siphon off someone elses excess emotion temporarily - either to calm them down, or cheer them up. Typically, she will pass this onto a readily available food or beverage item, but she can hold it within her. Doing it too often without letting off some steam, as it were, will result in her beginning to lose control of her abilities, and start leaking and imprinting emotions onto things around her.

Mood Ring Eyes

  • The only mutation that Hanna will actually admit to having is that her eyes change colors in relation to her mood or emotional state. She has no control over it, and even when she feels in control of her emotions, her eyes will still occasionally betray her. The can go a range of colors, from her natural warm brown and gold tinge, to an icy green blue in sadness, or fiery amber red in anger, or brilliant green gold with excitement. They also can act as a bit of a barometer and early warning sign that she is pushing herself too far, and unduly stressing herself - her irises fade to completely black and ultimately seem to vanish as she stresses more and more.
Connections

Happy Customers

  • Penny - Sweet girl, with a penchant for sweets. Wish I could do more to help her.
  • Micah - Bundle of energy. Nice guy, good taste in baked goods.
  • Jackson - Nice guy - love his outfits. He is vegan, but has a taste for sweets.
  • Jennifer and entourage of teens - looking for a lost kid. Hope they find him.
  • Felix - Interesting and observant young man. Cares for Penny, so he's ok in my book. Knows what I can do, must keep an eye on him.
  • Hive - Happiness is relative, but he seemed decent enough. Likes very strong coffee, no sugar.
  • Dusk - More than friends with the young man shot outside the bakery. Still was willing to help clean up. Wish there was more I could do for him.

Grumpy Pants

  • Murphy - Has an odd aversion to smiling.

Defenders of the Happy Cake (People who have at some point offered to protect either myself or the bakery)

  • Luke Cage - Proposed marriage and then offered to back me up if necessary. Nice guy, not my type.
  • Munch - Liked the cupcakes enough to offer the protection of his bike gang. Good to know.
  • Marrow - Odd girl. Offered a favor in exchange for bread and cupcakes for a group who couldn't get them themselves.
  • Trib - Nice guy, indignant at the thought of someone beating up a baker. Offered to help. We share a dislike of origami.

Counted Among Friends

  • Melinda - Fellow restaurateur, lovely young woman. Active in the community, and great to just chat with about the woes of running a business in the current state of the city.
  • Corey - Nice man. Apparently he's recently discovered that he's a mutant with some interesting abilities. Poor kid. Kind enough to help me with recovery.
  • Tag - Amazing artist, with the ability to produce colors out of thin air. Does commission work decorating cakes. Not the most stable individual - I worry about him.

And then some

  • NPC-Jayna - Barista, room mate, confidant. And then some. Very protective of her.
