Introduction

xxxxxStrange dreams of the future begin to arrive...

History

xxxxx

A number of people begin experiencing vivid, unexplained dreams regarding themselves in the future. These dreams will continue, extending farther and farther into the future until some of these people are called upon to find out how -- and why -- it's happening.

This is a chance for players to project ideas of where they'll be in a few years into their RP without any actual consequence! Anyone who wants to be a part of the TP is welcome to join; all you have to do is play out a scene that takes place in the future and you're considered part of the TP. Risk of harm to your character is very low to non-existent for the first part of this TP, but will increase significantly for the third part -- however, participation in the third part is completely optional, even if you took part in the first part.

As this TP involves time-travel, some important rules will be in effect for these scenes. If you're worried about breaking any of these rules, or are unsure about your ability to stay within the lines, feel free to contact Melinda or myself (Peter) to ask questions -- we'll also be available to 'monitor' your scenes (and play NPCs / our own characters, if need be!) to make sure you stay within the lines.

As events progress in the alternate future, this page will be updated with a timeline explaining what has been confirmed to have happened within that timeline so far. Please avoid any large-scale pronouncements in your scene (IE, having your scene refer to how registration was overturned by the Supreme Court) without at least speaking to Melinda or me first. Below are some of the basic rules to remember when RPing out these scenes!

  • For the first and second part, dreams happen one year and three years out from the current date. So if you have a future-dream, it will take place one year from the current date.
  • All MUSH-wide rules are still in effect, even in the alternate timeline. So no spontaneously acquiring Magneto's powerset in the future without speaking to staff, first!
  • The moment the dreams start, the timelines diverge; this is an alternate timeline, so these scenes represent *possible* futures for your characters -- not absolutes! These dreams may give your characters reason to change their ways, or change the future of others!
  • Remember, until you know for sure, any PC in the future might be dead / radically different! So don't refer to your good still-living friend Bill unless you know from a log (or Bill's player) that Bill is still alive and still your friend! NPCs are free game, though!
  • Characters wake up from these future dreams having seen and experienced everything their future-selves saw and experienced; nothing more, nothing less.
  • There are certain 'seeds' for future events we might ask people to include in their scenes. If you're interested, contact myself or Melinda and we'll supply you with one! They can be as simple as a television program in the background or a big news event your characters are responding to!
  • For all scenes that involve this TP (including just characters discussing the dreams!), please link to this page in the description and include the 'Future Past' category. For all scenes that actually take place in a dream (either in part or whole), please *also* include the 'Dream' category. Date-wise, use the real date you RP'd the scene on, but change the gamedate name to one year (or three years) later.

I realize the above is a lot to keep in mind, but we really want to make this as simple as possible for you -- so don't hesitate to ask any of us any questions to help put together your scene! Thanks for reading, and remember to have fun with it!

Errata

We've now moved into part 2; characters are dreaming three years in the future rather than one.

Timeline
Year One (Part I)
  • Late April/Early May 2014 - The Prometheus Gang (Jackson, Hive, Flicker, etc) successfully complete two more raids on Prometheus facilities.
  • June 3rd, 2014- Elliott Carruthers is elected to the office of New York City during a special election to replace the recently-deceased mayor.
  • Late June 2014 - The third (and final) Prometheus raid goes disastrously wrong when explosive brainchips take out all the labrats being rescued save one; 37 labrats die, with Matt as the only survivor (for reasons currently unknown, he did not have an explosive chip). Being Hive'd to them at the time, Hive immediately dies; Flicker suffers severe brain damage and dies a month later. Mirror recorded the event on-raid, the mass slaughter publicized -- leading to the closure of Prometheus and several arrests. A new prometheus project is launched, public and above-board, but Prometheus-classic is now officially dead.
  • 2015, early January - Someone (as of yet unknown) who works at the Mutant Registration Office leaks the names and addresses of the majority of mutants who are level 4 or higher. These mutants begin facing discrimination and harassment; the Friends of Humanity slowly begin putting out hits on them.
  • 2015, March 15th - A mutant teenager by the name of Hamsa is admitted to the Mendel clinic with a gunshot wound; his mutation manifests under duress, causing anyone he makes skin contact with to develop temporary 'scaliness'. The CDC briefly quarantines portions of Mendel Clinic to deal with the situation before determining the mutation is largely benevolent. However, the media uproar this event causes (with the Daily Bugle's headline proclaiming 'MUTANTS: CONTAGIOUS?'), particularly in the wake of the zombie plague, causes an immediate demand for means to mitigate the threat mutants pose to medical caretakers. Politicians and community leaders pledge to support new medical protocols for dealing with mutants; hospitals become even less likely to admit known mutants, and demands for medical professionals to have full and unfettered access to registration data are made. The Mendel Clinic will soon be a /lot/ busier.

Year Three (Part II)

  • 2015, June - After Prometheus' collapse, the Osborn Institute -- offering free health-care, education, and room-and-board to all mutants who willingly attend (in exchange for consensual study of their powers) -- begins a rapid rise as a friendlier, kinder replacement for Prometheus. The PR campaign behind the 'Land of Oz' is a monumental success, largely the work of Lucien Tessier. All mutants who attend the Osborn Institute are required to register.
  • 2015, November - The trial for the Oscorp 'Sentinel Medical Drone' ends in success, particularly after, during a rapidly escalating hostage situation, an EMT uses the drone to provide emergency care to both the hostages and the hostage-taker. Soon, the Sentinel drones become a staple of every ambulance in NYC.
  • 2016, February - A uniformed officer -- and member of the 'Freaksquad' (Elliott Carruthers' mutant-specialized police task-force) -- is killed on-duty in what is believed to be a hate-crime. The officer is a known and registered mutant. Either out of indifference or a lack of evidence, the killer is never found. The city is torn between two responses; grieving, and apathy.
  • 2016, April - Work at Oscorp begins on the Sentinel Mark II, a dual-purpose medical and non-lethal combat drone meant to potentially augment police officers.
  • 2016, June - After several high profile cold cases are solved by the 'Freaksquad', public opinion of the task-force begins to rise, with the murder of the previous member taking on a sort of folk-legend status.
  • 2016, July - In one of the cases solved by the 'Freaksquad', the defense lawyer brings up the usage of mutant powers to attain evidence. The case is thrown out, but the DA appeals.
  • 2016, September - Police officers are now equipped with temporary power-suppressing darts; this includes the 'Freaksquad'. At least one member of the 'Freaksquad' is 'darted' by an officer as a 'joke', leading to this officer's immediate dismissal from the force.
  • 2016, October - The Freaksquad court-case reaches the state supreme court, where the previous ruling is overturned. The defense attorney vows to take it to the federal Supreme Court.
  • 2016, November - Oscorp begins initial tests in secret on a prototype of the Mark II; Carruthers is invited as a guest to witness the machine.
  • 2017, February - 'Sentinel Mark II' drones are unveiled, to augment police officers in dangerous situations. The drones are equipped with power-suppressing darts. Public reaction is mixed. Osborn immediately assigns several to defend the Osborn Institute, which has received numerous bomb threats (and protests) and, despite its excellent PR, is continually accused (mostly by fringe mutants) of being another Prometheus trying to 'cure' mutations, just in a way prettier wrapper.
  • 2017, March - Sentinel Mark I drones start appearing in hospitals; they provide emergency medical care in situations where it would be dangerous for doctors to do so -- they are also capable of augmenting and aiding doctors and performing simple medical procedures in absolute privacy (allowing for the anonymity of patients).
  • 2017, April - A Sentinel Mark II drone is used to defuse a highly explosive situation in a NYC subway involving a telepath. No one is seriously injured; the act is hailed as an enormous success, and validation of the Sentinel program. Some members of the mutant community begin to prefer sentinels to cops; sentinels are less likely to beat you, and the Mark II drones record everything they see (which can be submitted as court evidence), forcing officers to behave more civilly around them.
  • 2017, May - Osborn is interviewed by Time, and is featured on their cover with a Sentinel Mark II drone. The article is overwhelmingly positive, laying out Osborn's desire to help solve both mutant problems and human problems, and also laying out his recent controversial decision to not design the sentinels for lethal combat, or use in war, despite the many lucrative military contracts offered to him to do so -- as he puts it, 'I feel it would be a betrayal of the spirit of the Sentinel program to use the very same machines that save so many lives to also take them'.
  • 2017, June - Work begins (in secret) on the Sentinel Mark III drone, a military-grade variant of the Mark II.
