Introduction

xxxxxAlison is a strong, generally likeable woman who decided early on not to let her mutant power define who she was. She's caring, independent, a tough interviewer, and all-around American Sweetheart. But cross the line, and she's all business. She'll cut you loose as soon as you become dead weight. But nicely. With a muffin basket, probably.

History

xxxxxCarter Blair and his wife Katherine were like any happy couple in the suburbs. Newly married, and with a baby on the way, they were as proud as anyone could be when they moved into the Gardendale district of Long Island, into their modest two-bedroom home. Shortly after they moved in, they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl which they named Alison, after Carter’s mother.

Katherine, however, suffered from post-partum depression, and one day, as her mother-in-law played with the baby in her room, she quietly packed a bag and disappeared, not to be seen for another twenty years.

Carter was heart-broken at his wife’s leaving, and dedicated himself to his daughter. Although they were never well-off, Carter made sure that Alison never wanted for anything that she needed. Alison, in turn, thought the sun rose and set on her father.

She led a fairly routine life, until the talent show in her eighth grade year. While singing in front of the school body, her mutant power to transform light into sound manifested, and she bathed the auditorium in a shifting pulse of light. While the students were appreciative of the light show, school officials removed Alison from school, citing concern for her personal safety.

Confused and frightened by what was happening to her, Alison hid in her closet for two days, eyes shut against the light she couldn’t bring under control. Then, as if by some stroke of fate, Professor Charles Xavier entered her life. He had a school, he said, where he could train her in how to control her powers, and perhaps use them to benefit the world.

Controlling her powers was her primary concern, and she went, enrolling in Xavier’s in the next semester. There she trained with the Professor, and received her high school diploma. Having learned more about her powers, and confident in what she could do with them, she was ready for the next step.

She had no interest in remaining at the school, a fact that the Professor accepted graciously, although she remains an ally to the school, and will occasionally provide her services as ad hoc teacher and field trip chaperone. Instead, she attended Emerson University, where she received her degree in Communications.

She attempted a career in film, but never managed to be more than a B-Movie scream queen, starring in such films as The Killers That Crept, and The Man-Wolf. Abandoning her movie career when her agent recommended that she come clean about being a mutant, she turned her attention to the small screen. Finding a niche in television, she quickly became a hit on a local news show. Eventually, she would follow this with her afternoon talk show, “Alison!”

The show is still gaining an audience in the New York area, and Alison has plans to try and syndicate it when it finally takes off. No offers have been made to date.

Powers

xxxxxAlison is a mutant with the superhuman ability to transform sonic vibrations which reach her body into various types of light. This ability seems to operate over a great range of frequencies, including the audible spectrum (35 to 16,500 cycles per second), and a great variation of sound pressure levels regardless of the complexity, dissonance, or randomness of the sound. For example, a car crash and a symphonic passage of equal duration will both produce usable incoming acoustic vibrations.

The best source, however, is the sound of music, particularly that which is rhythmically sustained. Not only is music more pleasant to her ears, but the steady beat of contemporary popular provides a more constant source of sound to convert. The precise means by which this conversion process works is as yet unknown, but it must involve a body-wide energy field that controls the energy levels of the outer electron shells of her body in such a way as to cause the cascaded release of photons.

Because of the manner in which she transmutes the energy, Alison, like Cyclops, seems not to require extra caloric intake after an expenditure of her powers like other mutants observed with similar powers. However, using them over-frequently or in large doses will leave her physically weakened until enough acoustic energy has been re-absorbed.

The field thus operates in a similar fashion as the process that creates a laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) and apparently has the same efficiency as a laser (99.9 percent). The released energy is far greater than the incoming kinetic energy and therefore must involve another, unknown energy source as well. Left undirected, Alison’s light will radiate from her body in all directions, producing regular flashes of white light (white light is a mixture of all portions of the visible spectrum). By conscious control over the light she produces, she can control its direction, frequency (color), amplitude (intensity), and duration.

Alison must consciously or subconsciously will the light to leave her body. Otherwise, light would "leak" from her at all times, even when she was asleep or unconscious. Alison can produce numerous effects with the light she converts from sonic vibrations. She can simply cause a bright glow all about her body. She can create very simple patterns out of rays of light like circles, squares, triangles, and stars. . She can create a pulse of light on the order of several thousand watts seconds of power, which temporarily blinds people with its brilliance. She can create a chaotic cascade of sparkling lights and colors that severely upsets other people's equilibrium, or a pulsating strobe-light effect. By concentrating, Alison can generate a coherent beam of light, approximating a laser beam, with which she can cut through virtually anything by narrowing the point of contact. Unfocused, said photon emission can act as a blunt object, capable of striking an opponent with a fair amount of force.

Her training at Xavier‘s, mostly in the same vein as Cyclops‘, taught her how to produce such laser-like beams with much less effort than it previously required of her. She generally directs the laser from a single finger when she requires precision in its use, since pointing aids her in defining its direction. But she can also direct laser blasts from both hands at once when she wishes, for example, to demolish a large structure. She most often uses her hands for directing her light effects, but she could also use other parts of her body.

Alison's potential to convert sound to light is limited only by her ability to hear-- if the sound is loud enough to cause her pain, she will not be able to focus to transform it into the needed light. Curiously, she cannot use her own un-amplified voice as a source of sound for her transduction abilities. Alison's body, especially her eyes, shields itself against any injurious effects of her light transducing abilities, and against those of bright lights in general. Her ability to transform sound oddly does not protect her from being deafened by loud noises. If she is deafened, she is unable to convert sonic vibration into light.

Former Pop Star - Alison was a pop star early in her career, and enjoyed a modicum of success in that area. Only die-hard pop fans will recall her singing career, though.
Scream Queen - Alison was a B-movie actress who starred in such notably bad movies as 'The Killers Who Crept,' 'The Living Vampire', 'The Man-Wolf', and 'Tomb of Dracula.'
Talk Show Host - Alison is the host of a local daytime talk show titled 'Alison!' It is a show that aspires to be a combination of Oprah and Good Morning America.
Nose for News - Alison really wants her show to succeed, so she can often be found investigating news stories that might appeal to a broad audience. She is notable in that she does not shy away from portraying mutants as normal, everyday people.
