Introduction

In a world with Actual Superpowered People and No Marvel Comics, the landscape of media looks... not that different from ours, but has some of its own unique twists. This page is a reference for what Media About Mutants looks like ICly!

Trends in Mutant Representation

Superhero media exists in universe as it does in the real world, with the notable exception of No Marvel Properties, nor Marvel Comics as a company, exist. Most of these have leaned hard, whether in-text or in marketing, into making it Very Clear that none of the superheroes are mutants. This trend only gained popularity after the reappearance of Captain America, known superhuman, in 2019. Media that exists IRL can be assumed to exist unaltered in-universe, though the response of audiences may have been different!

Explicit mutant representation has generally looked something like this:

  • No visibly mutant actors have ever secured any Important Roles but here and there they can get very small parts playing "killer" "monster" "killer who is also a monster" type of roles. More commonly, regular humans are put into heavy makeup to play monstrous killer mutants.
  • Visual, live-action media has a strong tendency to portray mutations that are visible (and scary), or to portray mutations that are violent and dangerous or Terrifying Telepathy.

Common Tropes

  • fosse ran out of steam here please add in as yall like

Specific IC Media

Film and TV

  • Law and Order: MID -- the only show on television that has Regular, "Positive" mutant rep, period. Positive not like GOOD because it's shitty cops, but positive like the portrayals are intended to be sympathetic.

Literature

Music

  • Ryan Black is the first out mutant celebrity and as such, his music is taken as Mutant Anthems whether or not the songs are actually about Mutants.
